What Causes Canker Sores? What are the risk factors ?
Canker sores are a common form of mouth ulcer. Women are more prone than men. They may occur at any age, but usually first appear between the ages of 10 and 40. Canker sores usually appear on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips, tongue, soft palate, and the base of the gums. They usually begin with a tingling or burning sensation, followed by a red spot or bump that ulcerates. Pain decreases in 7 to 10 days, with complete healing in 1 to 3 weeks. Particularly large ulcers (greater than 1 cm in diameter) often take longer to heal (2 to 4 weeks). Occasionally, a severe occurrence may be accompanied by nonspecific symptoms of illness, such as fever or malaise.

Canker sores tend to recur periodically in those individuals that are prone to them.

Canker sores are hereditary, as they often run in families. There may also be an immune system link. Ulcers may develop in response to a mouth injury such as during dental procedures. Canker sores may also occur at the site of a bite when the tongue or cheek is bitten. Other factors inlude emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (such as iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and similar situations. Canker sores are commonly associated with concurrent viral infections.

Is there any remedies or treatment for these painful sores? How do you get rid of Canker sores?
In order for any oral ulcer to heal, the cause of the injury must first be eliminated. Then, any necrotic tissue debris in the ulcer bed must be removed so that healthy new cells are able to migrate into the damaged area and grow. In the normal course of healing in an untreated individual, the immune system is relied upon to perform and promote all of these activities. A limiting factor in the rate of ulcer healing is the capacity of the immune system of an individual to prevent further damage and to clear the way for repair cells to infiltrate and grow.

Therapeutic cauterization and/or Laser Treatment refers to the process of applying a physical or chemical agent to damaged tissues in order to denature the underlying structures in a way that promotes healing. The debridement of ulcerated areas by cauterization aids the immune system and enhances the healing process through sterilization of the ulcer site, accelerated removal of necrotic debris, and creation of a membranous layer of denatured tissue that promotes normal repair processes.

Therapeutic cauterization under controlled conditions can be carried out in a dentist office, by using a Soft Tissue Diode Laser. While canker sores are self healing, if they get very painful or require immediate resolution.
